Links

Ordnance Survey - this site provides free maps as well as the location of your nearest options outlet to buy a site-centred scale plan (under "Business - how to buy"). There are also beautiful monthly photographs to use as desktop wallpaper.

Landownership Scotland - the best place to go to find who owns any area of ground in Scotland, from a house to a castle, from a lane to a motorway, from a ransom strip to a field.

Registers of Scotland - general information on the services provided by the Registers. If you wish to know the price paid for all properties sold in a particular postcode (like EH10 7) in the last six months, this information can be ordered on-line from here. The Registers will also carry out simple searches against houses, although they will take a lot longer than Landownership Scotland to do so and they are not professional searchers where more complex enquiries are involved

National Library of Scotland's Map Library - there are digitised versions of some very old maps and you can while away the time seeing how your area used to look in days gone by. Some of the old maps are beautiful works of art.

National Archives of Scotland - the repository of all Scotland's public and legal records. This web site provides information on the range of records held and the history of the records. There is also an online search facility.

Who owns Scotland - a not-for-profit site planning to eventually map 75% of the privately-owned rural land in Scotland (donations requested). It's worth a look just in case the ground you're interested in is here.

Landownership Surveys - a specialist service for the owners of Scottish landed estates. They use information from the Estate Chartulary, in conjunction with Sasines and Land Register information, to plot the extent of an Estate and show all the parts feued or otherwise removed from the Estate title. The end result is a map and detailed cross-referencing to an index to establish the exact extent of an Estate title.

Alison Farmer - as a proud mother, I have to give a link to my daughter’s web site.
