Landownership Scotland

Who owns that land?

About Ann Farmer

I spent my early years in the suburbs of Glasgow and went to the University of Glasgow where I obtained a BSc with Honours in Chemistry. I taught Chemistry and General Science for 4 years at Bearsden Academy before leaving to be a full-time Mum. When my children were young and I was the treasurer for my local branch of the playgroups association, I studied for a Higher in Accounts, never thinking that I would put this skill to good use later in my life.

When my husband changed his job in 1987, we moved to Edinburgh. I started work as a searcher in 1988, once all three of my children were at school. Although I had never even heard of this job before I applied for it, I soon discovered that I enjoyed it. After a few years of doing routine searching, I moved on to investigative work and built it up from a low number of jobs a week to the much greater demand that now exists for this service.

I believe that my scientific background gives me a logical, analytical training with a capacity for the lateral thinking necessary for investigative searching. I get a real feeling of "eureka" out of finally finding a title after many hours of searching. I also feel the sense of history in some of the documents I examine, which can be 250 years old. I was recently handling letters written by the architect Robert Adam in the 1770's.

I hold a Certificate of Professional Development in Conveyancing Practice and also in Advanced Conveyancing Practice, both awarded by the University of Strathclyde.
